Since DB2 9 XML is deeply embedded in DB2 as a data type. XML can be stored inside the database. In this session we explain how with SQL/XML and XPath you can store, query and manipulate the XML documents. To be successful with XML you will have to learn some new techniques. This session gives you an overview of what is needed and where you need some extra planning in your next project when XML is going to be stored in DB2.

DB2 10 for z/OS introduces numerous enhancements in DBA operations, application programming efficiency as well as various performance improvements. In this presentation the new DB2 10 features are presented in action on some of the common database administration and programming tasks. It shows how the tasks were typically performed in DB2 9 and earlier versions and how the same tasks can be performed with DB2 10. The attendees will not only learn what they can expect from migrating to DB2 10, but also hear useful hints and tips about earlier DB2 versions.

This presentation will review the content of the DB2 10 for z/OS product that was recently made generally available. We’ll review the new SQL capabilities provided by features like bi-temporal tables, the new 64-bit exploitation that provides better overall system scalability, the new indexing and tablespace formats, and much more. DB2 10 provides an opportunity for customers to get current on the latest DB2 technology, and has important performance and availability improvements to help justify the cost of upgrading to DB2 10. DB2 10 can support migration from both DB2 9 for z/OS and DB2 for z/OS V8, so this is an exciting opportunity for all DB2 customers.

BP tuning looks very complex. I was trying to simplifies BP tuning and explain the methods I used to put them behind the barn. It is not “by the book”, but it works.

Ever since I started working with DB2 back in 1989 with Version 1.3, DBAs have needed the ability to change database structures with minimal or zero interruption to the Business Service. Back then almost all you could do was to add new columns to the end of a Table but fortunately the situation has improved significantly over the years and many more schema changes can now be made online. However, just recently I have been speaking to more customers who have needed to change Tablespace characteristics such as DSSIZE or SEGSIZE, or to convert objects to the UTS format introduced in DB2 9 for z/OS. Before the Deferred Alter functionality introduced in DB2 10 for z/OS making any of these changes required you to Unload and Load the data, leading to an extended business outage.

This presentation explains what you can change online and, perhaps more importantly, what you can’t. We also discuss some of the other implications when making a Schema change, such as the impact on Packages, Triggers and Dependent Views. We will discuss a vendor neutral method for reducing the outage required when making changes that cannot be accomplished with an Alter Statement. The session will discuss features available in versions up to and including DB2 10 for z/OS and the new Deferred Alter referred to above.

Couple of years ago we were very proud of automating all our maintenance. But with all the cost reduction that is so „popular“ lately, maintenance became kind of a pain-point because of the resource consumption. In order to preserve the quality and performance of our database and reduce the unnecessary resource consumption we turned our maintenance to Real Time Statistics based maintenance. This presentation will cover RTS basics, the process we applied and main benefits we got out of it.
