BUILT-IN Functions - I didn't know Db2 could do THAT!

Date:
Tuesday, 10 April, 2018 - 15:00 - 16:00
Speaker:
Steve Thomas

Were you aware than Db2 for z/OS now supports more than twice as many SQL BUILT-IN functions as it did 20 years ago? The World has moved on significantly from the basic Functions such as SUM, COUNT and AVG which were all that were available when many of us first learnt SQL. There are now well over 200 Functions supported providing a huge range of powerful features. As well as the basic data manipulation and Mathematical Functions you would expect there are advanced analytical capabilities, sophisticated array management and aggregation features, XML, Security and more, all provided out of the box. Unfortunately many users have not kept up to date with advances and we find Programmers still coding requirements manually in whatever language they are using when the Database itself could be doing much more of the heavy lifting. This session will review the current capabilities of the native BUILT-IN functions provided by Db2 for z/OS and will highlight some of the more useful ones. It will be valuable whether you’re a new Application Programmer or an experienced DBA looking for an update on SQL capabilities.

Improve application performance reliability through plan stability with Db2 z

Date:
Tuesday, 10 April, 2018 - 13:45 - 14:45
Speaker:
Patrick Bossman

Learn how to deliver improved reliability and stability to your critical business applications using query performance stability capabilities delivered over the last few releases. This presentation will discuss dynamic plan stability, static plan stability, and APREUSE/APCOMPARE capabilities. What they are and how you can use them to reduce risk of query performance regressions from resulting in unexpected "application outages".

This presentation is a deep dive into analyzing query performance situations. The best practices approach utilized by Db2 for z/OS query performance diagnosis team. This presentation walks through what information is used, how information is layered onto the query, explain information, and optimizer choices information - and how to use it to evaluate a chosen access path versus alternates. While this presentation is targeted to Db2 for z/OS, the principles apply to evaluating query performance for any relational database.

IBM Db2 z satisfy developers' need for speed

Date:
Tuesday, 10 April, 2018 - 10:30 - 11:30
Speaker:
Patrick Bossman
Technology surrounding business is changing rapidly. Businesses need to deliver faster and more frequently than ever before. In response to these competitive pressures, development organizations are adopting DevOps practices - Agile software development, Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery. These practices focus on delivering smaller, more frequent changes, more rapidly. A key foundation to achieve successful implementation is automating the application deployment process, and reducing the overhead and bottlenecks in the application deployment process itself.
This presentation will discuss Db2 z developer services, designed to enable companies to deliver developer self-services and automated deployments, radically improving developer efficiency, while retaining expected mainframe qualities of service through efficient design, review, and approval processes for database schema changes.
