Let’s Make IT(DB2) Better !

Date:
Monday, 11 lipanj, 2012 - 15:30 - 16:30
Program:
Common Track
Speaker:
Zeljen Stanic

Many times if you ask how to fix the performance problem the answer is “It depends”. This presentation will address DB2 for z/OS performance management and tuning. We will start with data modeling, database design, testing ….. and end with performance monitoring suggestions. We will touch areas of application, database and system performance. Some aspects of data quality aspects will be mentioned too.

The Online Schema Revolution

Date:
Monday, 11 lipanj, 2012 - 14:15 - 15:15
Program:
Common Track
Speaker:
Steve Thomas

The latest improvements in Online Schema capabilities introduced in DB2 10 for z/OS represent something more like a Revolution rather than an enhancement to the OLS Evolution capabilities we’ve been used to seeing in successive releases of DB2. For the first time DBAs can register the changes they wish to make and then implement them at a time of their choosing using an Online Utility rather than having the object concerned move into an Advisory Status which may cause serious Performance Issues or worse.
This session will describe the new OLS capabilities, how to use them and some pitfalls which may not be immediately obvious when you read the new features list. Come and listen to the way of the future as far as making Changes to your DB2 database structures is concerned.

DB2 10 Performance Experiences Part 2: Application enablement

Date:
Monday, 11 lipanj, 2012 - 12:15 - 13:15
Program:
Common Track
Speaker:
Cristian Molaro

During this session we will concentrate on the DB2 10 changes that help applications to perform better, faster and in a more efficient way.
Bi temporal support, hash, index include columns, inline LOBs and many SQL improvements have the potential to accelerate our current and future applications. We will discuss and explore the most important of them.
We will also talk about the DB2 10 CPU reduction potential and the DB2 10 performance expectations.
This presentation recollects the experiences of co-authoring the redbook “DB2 10 Performance Topics” and the observations of users of DB2 10 for z/OS.

DB2 10 Performance Experiences Part 1: System considerations

Date:
Monday, 11 lipanj, 2012 - 11:15 - 12:15
Program:
Common Track
Speaker:
Cristian Molaro

This session will discuss and explain the DB2 10 for z/OS subsystem changes that improve performance. We will talk about the changes that could hurt your system as well.
The focus will be on these topics that are of the most interest froma practical point of view in today’s context.
For instance, the DB2 10 storage relief could help to dramatically improve the DB2 for z/OS scalability and help to consolidate DB2 subsystems; but what it really means in practical terms? We will address this and other subjects from a pragmatic point of view.
This presentation recollects the results of co-authoring the redbook“DB2 10 Performance Topics” and the experiences of users of DB2 10 for z/OS.

Trends and Directions in Database Technology

Relational database technology has become a key element of most enterprise IT architectures over the course of the last 25 years. During that period of time, relational database products like DB2 have evolved significantly to address the changing technology and business needs of customers. This evolution has come in the form of dramatic improvements in performance, scalability, availability and system management. The evolution has also introduced major functional enhancements to the relational database products that represent significant departures from the original concepts described by Dr. Codd in his seminal research. For example, customer demand for object database features in the 1990′s caused relational products like DB2 to introduce stored procedures, user-defined functions, and triggers as a vehicle for customizing the behavior of the relational database engine. More recently, most of the major relational products have evolved to include native data stores and query language enhancements to handle XML.
In the past few years, a number of new database technologies have been introduced: in-memory data stores, graph stores, column stores, name/value stores, etc. Some industry pundits have proclaimed that these technologies represent the end of the relational database era. In this session, we will discuss some of these new technology developments, and describe some of the work that is being done within IBM to continue the evolution of DB2 to address these new technology and business needs.
