Some Things About Databases …. And Some About Elefants, Sparks and Lakes

Date:
Monday, 10 April, 2017 - 15:00 - 16:15
Speaker:
Goran Bavčar

We’ve all heard/red/somebody told us/… about hadoop, big data, noSQL, data lakes, clouds… and we made ‘check’ in front of ‘I know what it is but it’s not my day-to-day business so I don’t care’ statement.

The chance is that it will become your problem sooner than you think. This presentation might help you understand where, when and how to place all those things in your environment.

Tuesday, 11 April, 2017 - 15:00 - 16:00
Speaker:
Karl Fleckenstein

Since DB2 11.1’s release in June 2016, we have made numerous updates enhancing functions and introducing new ones. Karl will kick it off with an overview of new features and enhancements in the latest release delivered in December 2016.
Here are the highlights:
- Further query and ETL performance improvements with BLU Acceleration
- DB2 native encryption HSM support
- Even greater Availability with faster DB2 crash recovery
- New configuration parameters in DB2 workload manager (WLM) to define resource entitlements and CPU limits for the entire database
- Increased Serviceability with monitoring extensions and larger log file sizes
- New O/S support and more
Karl will also go over the new product signature designation and what that means for you.

DB2 11.1. – A Query Optimizer Perspective

Date:
Tuesday, 11 April, 2017 - 11:45 - 12:45
Speaker:
John Hornibrook

DB2 11.1 and 11.1.1.1 provide a number of new features to extend DB2 capability and provide improved performance. Leading the list is BLU Acceleration in a massively parallel processing (MPP) configuration, which allows DB2's leading edge compressed column-organized table support to run across multiple servers to provide the ability to support databases that are hundreds of terabytes in size. Additionally, a number of improvements have been made to BLU join, sort, correlated subquery and analytic function processing to provide even better performance in all BLU configurations. This presentation will help you understand how BLU technology works, what has changed in DB2 11.1/11.1.1.1 and the role of the query optimizer in achieving industry-leading performance.

Vita Statistic – What You Should Know About DB2 for Linux, UNIX and Windows Catalog Statistics

Date:
Tuesday, 11 April, 2017 - 10:30 - 11:30
Speaker:
John Hornibrook

The DB2 for Linux, UNIX and Windows query optimizer is responsible for choosing optimal query access plans, however it can't do its job properly without vital information about your data and database objects. The RUNSTATS utility has been used for years by database administrators to collect these statistics and store them in the system catalog tables. However, statistics collection has significantly evolved since RUNSTATS was first introduced. DB2 has a rich set of statistics to help the optimizer understand complex relationships in your data and across your tables. Statistics can be collected automatically and even at query optimization time. This presentation will provide an overview of DB2 catalog statistics and the options to collect them, to help you achieve optimal query performance, with minimal administration effort.
