DB2 for z/OS System Tuning

Date:
Thursday, 21 June, 2007 - 09:00 - 15:00
Speaker:
Klaas Brant

The more you understand how DB2 is internally structured, the easier it will be to do system tuning. This presentation will teach you the different components that make up DB2 for z/OS. With every part we examine, we also will look how we can tune this component to achieve maximum performance. This seminar is unique since it focuses completely on the system side of DB2. Once you know how DB2 services your requests you also will find it easier to understand application tuning and the recent DB2 enhancements. This seminar is completely up to date with Version 8 aspects. The target audience is people who have multiple years of experience with DB2 and who want to learn more about the internal structure of DB2.

DB2 Version 8 Partitioning - Warts and All

Date:
Wednesday, 20 June, 2007 - 13:15 - 14:00
Speaker:
Phil Grainger

We all know that Version 8 of DB2 for z/OS introduces a new way to partition your data - we now have Table Based as well as Index Based partitioning. Is it all good news though? This presentation looks at the new capabilities of table based partitioning, considers the advantages (and there are many) before looking at some of the pitfalls awaiting the unwary. As with all new features of DB2, there are some hidden surprises that may cause problems that are not immediately aparrent

DB2 z/OS Locking Problems and Solutions

Date:
Wednesday, 20 June, 2007 - 12:15 - 13:15
Speaker:

XML is here to stay. More and more is this method used to transmit and store data. What is so cool about XML? XML data is different from relational data. So how are we going to handle this? Klaas will explain what XML is and why it is used so much. Then we will analyse how we can store, extract and assemble XML. All options are available in DB2. We will go a complete journey with XML functions, XML extender and Native XML storage.

Getting high availability and performance, the V9 update

Date:
Wednesday, 20 June, 2007 - 11:15 - 12:15
Speaker:
Jan Henderyckx

As with every version of DB2 new features are introduced that introduce better and faster ways to get things done.
In the area of high availability and performance DB2 9 introduces a whole set of options that make life easier and faster.
But as usual not all problems are gone, what else would we get in version next.
This presentation goes into the V9 new functions and covers how this can help you and where you still need to pay attention.

DB2 and ITIL

Date:
Tuesday, 19 June, 2007 - 16:15 - 17:00
Speaker:
Zeljen Stanic

The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) was first developed in the late 1980s and has become the de facto standard for IT Service Management and the delivery of IT services to the business.
There is a growing awareness of this standard among IT organizaions many of whom are now adopting the practices defined by ITIL and as a result are looking for tools to support their adoption of ITIL processes. There is also a growing interest around the world in the adoption of the best practices defined by ITIL for Service Management.
This presentation will outline basic ITIL processes and present how DB2 solutions can support those ITIL practices. In some cases the solutions directly assist in the implementation of the processes defined by ITIL, in other cases the solutions provide the support that staff following the ITIL processes would use to make the process more efficient and effective.

The Day After

Date:

Speaker:
Mirna Kos
Speaker:
Nenad Vidak

Presentation objectives:
DR/BC terms and solutions overview
Details on the DR solution installed in ZABA
Setting priority of the data
DB2 group restart considerations
Additional benefits of  the DR solution

Outline:
DR/BC solutions overview – Types of DR
DB2 disaster recovery – Data loss/recovery time considerations
Solution implemented in ZABA – Implementation steps, current situation, hardware overview
DB2 group restart procedure (DB2 DR procedure) – Step by step analysis
Additional capabilities and future plans

Full Abstract:
Data protection and business continuity are the keys to business survival especially in banking. Being open for business in the shortest time after some kind of disaster occurred and having no data loss are high priority demands. This presentation will introduce the audience with the overview of business continuity (BC) and disaster recovery (DR) solutions. The DR/BC solution implemented in Zagrebacka Banka will be discussed in more details. Special attention will be given to DB2 group restart at recovery site emphasizing important elements that need to be considered in such procedure: setting the data priorities, tuning DB2 ZPARMs for group restart and removing restrictive statuses form DB2 objects at DR site. Additional value of having an exact copy of production system available for testing will also be addressed.
