Bio

Daniel Martin is the development director and CTO for Watson Machine Learning on Z, OpenPages, IDAA and Data Gate, and works out of IBM's Research & Development Lab in Boeblingen, Germany. Previous to this role, he was the lead technical architect of IDAA and Data Gate, and contributed to various parts of these products over the past 10 years. He even remembers the time of the humble beginnings of their predecessor product, then called the "Smart Analytics Optimizer for Db2/z" (ISAO). Daniel has spoken about these products at several conferences and briefings, and can be reached at https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-martin-4a3a0998/

Past presentation

This session introduces the Lakehouse concept and what it sets apart from data lakes and traditional data warehouses. We focus on mainframe operational data stores as data feeds, and how such feeds can be integrated with other, non-mainframe data sources, how Lakehouses re-invent analytics and how machine learning training pipelines can be fed using data extracted and refined on a Lakehouse.

European SQLAdria Seminar – Vodice 2023 IBM Data Lakehouse approach with Db2 for z/OS and zSystems data

An Open Data Lakehouse is a new architecture that integrates traditional data warehouse and data lake concepts to accommodate various big data use cases. This presentation describes the IBM Data Lakehouse approach with its key components: (a) the Presto SQL engine for data analytics and the open lakehouse, (b) the metadata and governance layer, and (c) ACID support to access a variety of object storages (Amazon S3, MS Azure DLS, IBM COS) via the Apache Iceberg table format. Emphasis is on the integration of Db2 for z/OS and other zSystems data (VSAM and IMS). The presentation includes a demo of the solution.

10:00 - 11:00
European SQLAdria Seminar – Vodice 2022 How a Data Fabric can help you to organize, control and deliver mainframe Data to your applications
Data Fabric is a data management architecture to help you organize the various distributed data sources in your enterprise. It enables self-service access to data for building new applications and  enables data science across your enterprise. It does so by helping you to register discover data sources, learn about various properties of their data, points out sensitive information and allows to define data access or masking rules to manage confidentiality.
This talk explores the Data Fabric architecture briefly, but then quickly jumps into concrete implementation options using Db2 for z/OS as an example data source. We explore different data access methods like virtualization, caching and direct access and look at ways how to use and combine them in a small sample application.

09:30 - 10:30
European SQLAdria Seminar – Šibenik 2021 Keynote session: Building modern applications with mainframe data
Building modern, cloud-native applications that access Z data is hard: how to access your precious Db2 for z/OS tables from a public cloud location? how do you ensure low latency response times over these long distances? how do you protect your existing workloads from unforeseen peaks or malicious activity? How do you make sure cross-datacenter traffic is encrypted and secure, at rest and in motion?
In this talk, I want to take you on a journey on IBMs response to these challenges. We will see how Z data can be explored using IBM's Cloud Pak for Data platform, how this data can be published to a catalog for others to ease discovery and access, and how to implement a read-only cache on the cloud side to co-locate read-intensive applications and their data to for lowest-latency access. We will also see how existing business and applications on Z can be isolated from new read workloads using this cache, and how we plan to extend it to form a natural extension of Db2 for z/OS to the cloud.
