European SQLAdria Seminar – Šibenik 2017 Protecting "The Crown Jewels" – Your Data

This presentation will start by looking at why your application data is under threat and how hackers are no longer ignoring the Mainframe as a source of high value sensitive information. It will then move on to describe the features and functions, such as column level security, column masking, audit policies and trusted contexts, supplied out of the box with DB2 for z/OS to help automatically protect this sensitive and valuable data in your applications.

European SQLAdria Seminar – Dubrovnik 2015 Resetting Your Pain Threshold

The internals of DB2 and the way it is used have changed over the years although sometimes the methods and rules of thumb we use to monitor it haven’t kept pace. This session will take a look at some of the metrics we should be monitoring, explain why and, where appropriate, suggest credible thresholds you should be implementing to help you proactively monitor your subsystems and data sharing groups. Helping you catch issues before they turn into real pain.

European SQLAdria Seminar – Dubrovnik 2015 What’s Big About Big Data?

This is an updated session from one I gave a couple of years ago at SQLAdria. It will provide a refresher outlining the benefits, and potential pitfalls, of Big Data along with a look at some of the latest ways that DB2 is getting in the Big Data act. It will cover the latest advances in the DB2 Accelerator Engine as well as delve intp how DB2 11 has simplified the use of JSON to open DB2’s horizons to further data sources.

European SQLAdria Seminar – Dubrovnik 2014 The DB2 11 Charts – My Top 20 Features

As with every release of DB2 a large number of features, functions and enhancements have been added to this latest offering. In this presentation I have included my top 20 and will count down to my number one DB2 11 feature. What will it be and will you agree with me?

This session will initially take a brief look at how buffer pools have evolved over time. It will then concentrate on some of the more recently added functionality in this area in versions 8, 9 and 10 of DB2 and investigate what impact some of these changes will have on your subsystems.

SQLAdria Seminar – Dubrovnik 2011 Back to the Future

With DB2 10 IBM introduced the concept of Temporal Tables, providing the ability to associate data with a period or point in time. The vast majority of business applications rely on some notion of time. This innovation will help to drastically reduce the volume of application logic required to manage different, time constrained, versions of application data. This session will cover the various flavours of Temporal Tables and dig into the mechanics of what happens when the data in these tables is altered.

SQLAdria Seminar – Dubrovnik 2010 By the pool with the (IF)cids

DB2 does a good job in an imperfect world, but through a more proactive approach to pool tuning it’s possible to achieve greater throughput with the same BP resources. Size isn’t everything...

DB2 9 introduced a lot of new features, this session will concentrate on those that are included specifically to help get more bang for your buck.

16 lipanj 2009
10:00 - 11:00
SQLAdria Seminar – Dubrovnik 2009 SQL - A Little Knowledge is a Dangerous Thing

Objectives:
To firstly look at the real business reasons behind why we tune and why a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing when it comes to SQL. The bulk of the presentation will concentrate on illustrating how SQL can be ‘tweaked’ to produce better performance at a cheaper cost.

Outline:
Why do we tune?
What are the benefits?
Tuning SQL
Tips, techniques and pointers

Full Abstract:
Get more from your SQL, this section will cover how to tune your statements to provide the best return with the least resources. It’s often easy to get SQL to return the data you are looking for...but could you be doing it better?

15 lipanj 2009
14:15 - 15:15
SQLAdria Seminar – Dubrovnik 2009 Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics

Objectives:
To give an overview of the importance of collecting and providing DB2 with good statistics and ensuring filtering takes place as early as possible. The session also looks to introduce some of the new statistics related features available in DB2 9 as well as highlighting the problem of column correlation and providing steps to both detect and fix it.

Outline:
The DB2 Catalog
A brief History
Real Time Statistics
Distribution Statistics
Including Histogram Statistics
Defining, detecting and fixing column correlation
A look at the importance of good filtering

Full Abstract:
We spin a lot of cycles collecting them, how can we get the best out of them? A look back at how the catalog has grown in recent releases and what DB29 brings us in this area. We will also take a look at column correlation, what it is, how to detect it and how to fix it. Real Time Statistics, filtering and the importance of Distribution Statistics are also covered.
