Kurt Struyf is a version 9 IBM Certified Solutions Expert in Database Administration for OS/390 and Family Application Development and has been certified since version 6. He started his career at a major belgian bank. He is currently working for Competence Partners, a consultancy company. Kurt has over 10 years of DB2 experience and he works all over Europe and the USA, performing installations, migrations, tuning and other (system) DBA jobs. Besides his consultancy work, Kurt also teaches many DB2 and related topics for IBM and others throughout Europe and the USA. He has been a speaker at several IDUG conferences and regional user groups as well as IOD conferences both in Europe and the USA.

Since DB2 version 9 we have the possibility to store XML natively in DB2 tables. It’s really cool, it’s really powerful… BUT how do you start? What are your options? Do my developers know how to deal with this? Does my DBA speak, Xpath, Xquery or am I looking at Xtra problems?

For DB2 the log is crucial, critical, and vital even, but how much do you really know about it? You might know about undo and redo statements, but did you know DB2 can startup without its directory but not without its log? How does DB2 use its log during startup and shutdown? When are records forced to the log? For which objects will the log contain all recovery information? If you want to know the answer to these and many other log related topics, come to this session and we’ll demystify the log. It will show the importance and the power within the log. Almost everything is in the log, for you to use, but you have to be aware of it. This session will make you appreciate the DB2 log more and make you understand why it is so critical. Either you log or you lose.

Full Abstract:
This presentation is a PRACTICAL, HANDS ON way to SQL performance tuning and SQL improvement. When logically correct SQL will always return and answer, the statement might be expensive or cheap but is quite often suboptimal. This presentation will explain the ground rules to writing performing SQL and has numerous EASY-TO-FIX, REAL LIFE improvements. If you are a developer or a beginning DBA, you’ll gain an understanding to better SQL writing and tuning. If you are a more experienced DBA you’ll get a thorough refresh, learn something new and walk a way with an idea of “how to explain SQL to your developers”.
