European SQLAdria Seminar – Vodice 2024 Introduction to watsonx.data and Db2 Integration
The data lakehouse is the latest architecture in the evolution of data management. However, it’s not likely to replace existing data warehouses and will instead bring value by augmenting and optimizing them. As such, it’s important that data professionals, like database administrators and data engineers, understand the lakehouse architecture and its components – many of which are open-source. This includes object storage, open data file and table formats (e.g. Parquet, ORC, and Iceberg), metastores, and query engines, among other things. Db2 Warehouse 11.5.9 meets this world head-on by introducing a new DATALAKE table type, which allows you to create and work with tables in object storage, using open data formats like Parquet and ORC and the Iceberg open table format. Db2 Warehouse 11.5.9 also introduces integration with watsonx.data, IBM’s next generation, fit-for-purpose data store built on an open data lakehouse architecture.  In this session you’ll be introduced to the data lakehouse architecture and the common components seen across lakehouse vendors, with a closer focus on IBM’s data lakehouse platform, Db2 11.5.9 new capabilities and watsonx.data.

European SQLAdria Seminar – Šibenik 2018 Deploying Db2 in Your Own Private Cloud

People are making the move to the cloud and there are many reasons why: agility, speed of deployment, elastic growth, lack of skills to configure and manage the full stack themselves on-premises, etc. In short, the complexity involved in building and managing systems makes public cloud deployments very attractive. However, some organizations aren't ready to make the move yet. Needing to keep data close for performance reasons, regulatory requirements around data locality, or just general distrust of somebody else managing their systems are some of the reasons often given for this. But that doesn't mean that they can't benefit from a cloud model behind their own firewall. Enter the private cloud. In this session you will learn about how Db2 can be deployed in a private cloud model. For example, Db2 is increasingly becoming available as Docker container images, making the deployment of transactional or warehouse database environments in your own private cloud much faster and easier. Private cloud platforms are also a great way to run your own private clouds on top of which Db2 and other software can be deployed. For example, IBM Cloud Private (which includes a Kubernetes-based container platform) turns a cluster of servers into your own private cloud. Or use a platform which includes a hypervisor that virtualizes compute and storage resources – such as IBM's Hyperconverged Systems powered by Nutanix. Spinning up infrastructure and/or software on-demand provides the speed and agility that you don't get with the traditional IT model. And of course, it's never an either/or discussion – Db2 is a great fit for both private and public clouds, giving you the foundation for true hybrid solutions.

European SQLAdria Seminar – Šibenik 2018 What's new for pureScale and availability in DB2 V11.1

DB2 pureScale is constantly being enhanced with new features and capabilities. Learn more about them, with a focus on the exciting new features available in the latest Db2 11.1 version and subsequent fix packs. Included are things that make it much easier (and cheaper!) for you to give pureScale a try.

European SQLAdria Seminar – Šibenik 2018 Getting Started with DB2 pureScale

With industry leading availability and scalability, DB2’s pureScale feature is being implemented by clients in all industries around the globe. Learn more about the hardware and software requirements, what is involved in setting it up, best practices for deployment, how to plan for a move to pureScale, things to test, and resources that are available to help you build your skills.

More and more, organizations are looking to the cloud for agile and cost-effective "as-a-service" solutions. This includes the need for on-demand, cloud-based database offerings, whether it be for new mobile and web-based applications or for the extension and modernization of an on-premise data warehouse. In this workshop you'll learn about the different options available for running Db2 in the cloud. If you want to host your Db2 databases in the cloud with the ultimate in flexibility then a bring-your-own-license approach or an instance of the Db2 Hosted service might be the right choice for you. Or if you're looking to push more of the management and maintenance tasks off to somebody else then you're going to want to take a look at fully-managed Db2 on Cloud and Db2 Warehouse on Cloud offerings. And if you're looking to a private cloud solution then Db2 Warehouse might be the right solution for you. In this workshop you'll learn all about these different ways of running your favorite database in the cloud including what's new with each of them. But don't worry if the cloud is relatively new to you, as we'll start off with an introduction and get you familiar with the basic terminology and concepts. Additionally, we'll cover some of the common ways for getting data loaded into Db2 in the cloud. This workshop also includes a hands-on lab (laptop required) in which you'll get some experience using Db2 Warehouse on Cloud.
