Mladen Jovanovski is zAnalytics Client Technical Specialist at IBM Hybrid Cloud SEE & Central. He is a long time passionate data enthusiast with 30+ years of experience in integrating, storing and processing data with various technologies, from COBOL and hierarchical databases in 1980s, to Apache Spark and Machine Learning nowadays. He is also a proud Linux user since 1997, for all his personal and professional needs, with huge experience in Enterprise Linux deployments.

Anomaly detection and root cause analysis of problems in Db2 for z/OS is complex. There are monitoring tools for Db2 that helps to determine when there are performance issues and provide great detail in helping the user to identify a root cause. But, the process can still be challenging for both, inexperienced and experienced DBAs. Db2 AI for z/OS (Db2ZAI) offers the ability to identify early symptoms of performance issues by leveraging machine learning to discover unusual performance events and provide a set of recommended actions to improve the situation. Even better, it provides a RESTful API to integrate this functionality into the above mentioned monitoring tools.

Leveraging machine learning technology, Db2 AI for z/OS collects data from the optimizer and execution history for Db2 for z/OS that are derived from workloads in your unique operating environment. It then finds patterns from this data and learns the optimal access paths for queries entering Db2 for z/OS as part of the model training process. Once trained, the models can be put into production to provide insights that help drive access path selection of the optimizer. Models trained and deployed from Db2 AI for z/OS are managed by the security-rich infrastructure in Machine Learning for z/OS, which also gives defined users a window into the models’ performance metrics.
